Nott-Us Woodturning
Based on the Black Isle, Highlands of Scotland.

THE BLACK ISLE, a district in the east of the county of Ross and Cromarty, Scotland, bounded North by the Cromarty Firth, East by Moray Firth, South by Inner Moray Firth (or Firth of Inverness) and Beauly Firth, and West by the River Conon and the parish of Urray. It is a diamond-shaped peninsula jutting out from the mainland in a north-easterly direction, the longer axis, from Muir of Ord station to the South Sutor at the entrance to Cromarty Firth, measuring 20 m., and the shorter, from Ferryton Point to Craigton-Point, due north and south, 12 m., and it has a coastline of 52 m. Originally called Ardmeanach.

Woods used are all hardwoods, locally sourced in the Highlands and Morayshire (Moss of Barmuckity, near Elgin) and include Ash, Beech, Spalted Beech, Birch, Silver Birch, Cherry, Elm, Wych Elm, Burr Elm, which has a character all of it’s own, Sycamore, Yew , Lime, and many more.

Engraving

Engraving is done by Hand, a pastime which I have been doing for over 20 years. Scenes are far ranging which the customer can decide; these are engraved onto Glass, Mirrors, Brass and Copper etc. Mirrors give a better perspective of the design.

In my 20 years of engraving I have done military aircraft, cartoons, buildings, name plates and such forth.

Wood Turner & Engraver

Wood is a wonderful tactile material.

Always full of surprises for the Wood Turner, grain, aroma, character and age of the wood.

These surprises are not always evident and only reveal themselves once turning has started.

Sometimes delightful, with wonderful spalting or smudges within the grain, others can be disappointing by being quite plain, but even these can be livened up with chatterwork, burnishing etc.

I turn a wide range of wood ware, Pens, Boxes, Bowls up to 30" in diameter.
